The Newport Harbor Trash Skimmer Project, implemented in August 2016, was made possible by funding from 11th Hour Racing. Our recently published 2016 Trash Skimmer Report tells the story of the skimmers’ first year of success in Newport Harbor. It highlights partnerships, implementation, and key achievements from each time the trash skimmers were emptied.
Within four months the two Newport Harbor Trash Skimmers at Perrotti Park gathered over 6,000 pounds of marine debris in fall 2016. The skimmers were operated and maintained daily by the City of Newport Harbormaster, and Clean Ocean Access’ resources assisted in inspecting the debris removed from the Newport Harbor.
The goal of the project is to reduce the amount of marine debris in the Newport harbor, increase the recreational value of the waterfront, bring awareness to the types of debris and potential sources, and promote environmental stewardship. These accomplishments have made a positive contribution to beautifying the coastline and improving local habitat, however, the biggest accomplishment is the fostering of environmentally responsible behaviors on land and sea.
