Majority of the foam pollution removed by the Newport Harbor Trash Skimmers (NHTS) consisted of foam cups and foam food containers. There are many easy ways to become part of solving the problem of foam pollution. Here are just a few ways you can change your behaviors to improve ocean health:
- When ordering take-out, bring a reusable container to carry your food. Most businesses will be very accepting of your “go green” initiative.
- Perform localized cleanups when you are at the beach or hiking along the coastline to inspire others, and ensure a clean environment for future generations.
- When you purchase products that contain foam, make sure to store it for the biannual recycling event for special material, such as foam.
The NHTS project, made possible by funding from 11TH Hour Racing, addresses the issue of surface marine debris and surface water pollutants in Newport Harbor. Be sure to check out the trash skimmers back in action this spring and stay tuned for exciting news!
